Livingstone's eggs

In November, it will be 150 years since David Livingstone first set eyes on Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) , which is better known as Victoria Falls.

A few years prior to visiting the Falls, he was in the Kalimbuka area, where he was sold some eggs which were off.

Some things never seem to change. The same just happened to me at Kandodo this morning. Normally I'd just ask Doviko to fetch some from the hen house, but a mongoose got in last night, and they've stopped laying.

I've followed many of Livingstone's footsteps. One of the most moving locations was Livingstone's House (site of) in Kolobeng. When Livingstone was there, the area was full of game. One of his daughters is still there, in a rather overgrown grave with a fence round it. The place has a very special atmosphere.

Here is a picture taken by someone else of the ruins of the house, which was destroyed by the Boers.

Ra Livingstone's Memorial is in Blantyre, a place about two hours trekking from the schemes in Bellshill. You had to go along the Clyde and seek adventure climbing through this mill and onto the road to the Memorial. Because nobody had any money, you had to climb the wall and walk around, wondering if any big people would come and throw you out, or call the polis. We did this (a group of about ten kids) several times. Nobody ever stopped us. There were grass huts. To the custodians somehow we were invisible. It said David Livingstone read books and educated himself while doing the dark satanic mill stuff. I remembered this when I worked in the steelworks. I read books about Trotsky. Me and David Livingstone. Was he bourgois or not? Did the bourgois dress him up to look like them, or is that what happens when you read books and smoke a pipe? Coopting, it might have been called about thirty years ago. Must have been a good guy. Must have tried anyway. Hotboy
