Cricket

Well I say!

We didn't get much done today. Instead, I encouraged Doviko to sit and watch the highlights from the Gabba, where Warney was on song. My goodness - he was going through his complete repertoire and took five wickets. If only Doviko could develop a flipper, it would add a litle more sport.

I quite like the look of the young Ramdin, the Windies new stumper, as a batsman at any rate. He dropped a sitter, though.

A joy to watch Hayden once more going down the wicket to the fast bowlers - and to think that three months ago he was reduced to a nervous wreck by the England bowlers.

Sad news from Pakistan about Michael Vaughan's knee.

I don't know what any of that is...
wickets, flipper, stumper, batsman, sitter. Sounds like some kind of sport!

Lee Ann - if you want a real sport you need to try rugby league. Maybe you saw the Aussies beating the Brits at Wigan last weekend?

I played at hooker in my rugby union days, and used to enjoy the post-match baths. After they forced me to practice tackling on frozen ground, I got my mother to write me an excuse every week.

My Dear Lee Ann,

What an absolute shame that you do not understand cricket. Its a wonderful game, but the rules are, to the uninitiated, rather complex. I could not begin to explain, except to say that the 'wicket' is the strip of ground in the middle of the field of play, where most of the action takes place.

My dear old chap Robmcj,

Did you ever play against the Royal High? If so, we may have locked horns.

Canada has a cricket team, as do many ex-colonial countries. The Canadian team is not particularly good, however.

I am trying to persuade Hotboy to meet me in the West Indies for the cricket World Cup in 2007, but he has little interest in the game, even though Scotland are playing there.

Some people think it is a very slow game, but if you understand what is actually going on (tactics, field-placings, wicket changes, bowling nuances, weather changes, pidgeons walking in the outfield, etc) it can be very exciting and action-packed.

The Test Match games take up to five days to play, much longer than baseball.

Australia were the best team for years, until England beat them recently. Brings tears of joy to my eyes.

Warney - real name Shane Warne - plays for Australia, and is reckoned to be the best slow bowler ever.
