Selection of bars

I say!

I would hate to give the impression that I spend an inordinate amount of my leisure time frequenting drinking establishments, but occasionally one does feel the need to imbibe.

Here is a selection of some more bars in which I have enjoyed the occasional Green, Castle or Tusker (depending on the location).

The first bar is surely managed by a marketing genious. The 'Super Modern' at Mangochi. The town has no mains electricity, but when the generator at the 'Super Modern' clicks in, the action begins.

Menzies IV ordering (I presume) water at the bar of the Gabs Sun, under the watchful eyes of two guards.

Henry Morton, Mrs M and Menzies IV at Odballs' bar, deep in the Okavango Delta.

Leopard Rock Hotel, Eastern Highlands, Zimbabwe. The original hotel was mortared during the war, and subsequently rebuilt into this delightful establishment.

The incomparable Vic Falls Hotel, run by Meikles.

A rather poor snap of the Sudan Club, Khartoum. Went 'dry' in the early 80s, but saw a lot of action before that. Rumours still circulate that there is a hidden 'stash' of gin somewhere in the basement.

Our dear beloved Ku Chawe on the plateau. Burnt down and rebuilt, and just about viewable from the front garden at Kalimbuka. Mrs M 'hiding' far right.

Myself, enjoying a Green at a bottlestore in Dedza.

Not only have they perfected the G&T, but they also serve some of the best food in Kenya - Peponi Hotel, Shella Beach, Lamu Island.

I say Carslemane!

Indeed, I did see your snaps of good old Hotboy, and it brought back many fond memories of my time in Edinburgh.

However, could you explain why he is wearing a jumper in that heat?

Who are the guys in uniform with Menzies IV? Airline pilots perhaps?

Mrs M is well hidden. You mentioned the war. Had the chairs on the right just been used to execute prisoners before tipping them into the ditch? It would explain why Mrs. M. was hiding. Or am I just having one of Hotboy's visions of violence?

PS I read your perfect partner attributes at Lee Ann's, and was impressed. Where on earth did you find someone like Mrs M? In Africa?

I especially liked "Has a mind of her own which is worthy of respect".

So many have the first part without the second.

Love the picture of the Mrs. and the boys. The boys have the cutest smiles. What kind of skeleton is that hanging?
The Leopard Rock hotel, has a stunning mountain in the background.
Vic Falls is quite beautiful.
Maybe you should go look for that stash of gin in the basement of the Sudan Club :)
I couldn't find Mrs in the Ku Chawe, but now I see her!
You look quite laid back in Dedza, very nice.
Great sky and trees in the last one.
As usual, love the photos!

I say!

Thank you all for your interesting comments.

The men in uniform are hotel guards, if I remember correctly. The airline crews do use the Gabs Sun Hotel, but it is mostly BA staff, etc.

We were resident at the Sun for five months whilst I was on hush hush duty. This might sound perfect, but being cooped up in two adjoining suites was difficult for Mrs M and the boys. The restaurant was excellent, however. Paul Simon stayed there during one of his tours, and visiting dignitaries were quite common.

The war I mentioned, during which the Leopard Rock was mortared, was the war in Zimbabwe, which finished a long time ago, though since then there have, of course, been many troubles in that country. It had little effect on us in Malawi, where there has never been serious conflict. The war in neighbouring Mocambique had a devastating effect on that country. Yau people live in both Malawi and Mocambique, as do Lomwe.

We have looked for the gin in the Sudan Club. Of course, with Sharia, it would be exceedingly dangerous to be found with alcohol in Khartoum. Ahem - that is not to say that it is impossible to imbibe, there.
